JD Wetherspoon PLC to open outdoor space in half of English pubs on 12 April


Wetherspoon has 875 pubs in the UK, including 750 in England.

PLC () said it is to re-open 394 pubs with outdoor space on 12 April, the earliest it can resume trading under the UK government’s roadmap to recovery.

Outlets with beer gardens, rooftop gardens and patios in England will be open from 9am to 9pm (Sunday to Thursday inclusive) and 9am to 10pm (Friday and Saturday) though some will face will specific local restrictions, said the FTSE 250 member. Food will also be served, but with a slightly reduced menu.

Orders and payment will be taken through the pub group’s app or at the table for those that don’t have the app on their phone.

Wetherspoon added it will not be taking bookings and said customers will go through the interior of a pub to get to the outdoor space if necessary.

Tim Martin, chairman, said last month the pub industry was on its knees and needed to reopen quickly to save thousands of jobs.

Pub groups not cheered by Budget

Pub groups reacted coolly to measures to support hospitality announced by Rishi Sunak in his latest spring Budget.

Pubs will be able to apply for up to an £18,000 restart grant that applies across the hospitality sector and will also get a six-month extension to the reduced 5% VAT rate for hospitality and leisure businesses.

Pubs groups also welcomed the extension of the job furlough scheme, which ash been a lifeline for many in the sector.

, for example, has 37,000 staff on furlough.

Others expressed disappointment that the rules preventing landlords from being evicted had not been extended, while the continued exclusion of alcohol sales from the VAT reduction.

Craft beer trade body Siba meanwhile said that small brewers had missed out on cuts to VAT, targeted grants and business rates relief.

Camra, the Campaign for Real Ale, meanwhile described just freezing beer duty rather than cutting it as a missed opportunity.
